4K and higher stutter on most laptops
4K H.264 or H.265 at 100 to 150 Mbps is already too heavy for smooth real-time playback on a mid-range laptop, and 6K or 8K multiplies the load again. The timeline stutters, previews drop frames, and long-GOP H.265 is especially punishing because every frame has to be reconstructed from its neighbours before it can be shown. Keeping the masters on the laptop also fills the SSD fast: a single 8K shoot can run into terabytes.
You do not need the full-resolution master on the local disk to cut. You need a light proxy that any machine can play, and the 4K, 6K or 8K original only at the export.
1080p proxies for smooth editing at any resolution

Frequently asked questions
Does this work for 6K and 8K, not just 4K?+
Yes. The proxy is 1080p whatever the master resolution, so 4K, 6K and 8K all edit smoothly on the same light proxy. Only the original that streams back at export changes resolution.
Why does H.265 stutter more than H.264 at the same bitrate?+
H.265 is long-GOP, so each frame is rebuilt from its neighbours, which is heavy to scrub. A 1080p H.264 proxy sidesteps that, and the H.265 master streams back only at export.
Will the proxy cache ever delete my master?+
No. The 4K, 6K or 8K master lives in the cloud with an automatic backup copy. The cache only holds proxies on your SSD; clearing it never touches the originals in the cloud.
How do I export at full resolution after cutting on proxies?+
In Resolve, FCP or Avid, Smart Relink switches the timeline clips to the streamed originals. In Premiere the desktop panel attaches the local proxy to the 4K, 6K or 8K clip, so you export from the original with no relink.
